Hi everybody, we fished the Narrow River for the past week a good four days
and the last time being Monday. I did in fact manage to take a fish that was 33"
and good fish wading. In these four days of fishing the river showed very little
bait almost no bait showing at all. The fish that we did catch where not easy to find.
We fished from Middle Bridge to the mouth of the river and only
took one fish every 15 minutes or so. That is with moving and trying many
different areas. The fish just have not come into the Narrow River in good numbers yet. We did take
some shad as well, not many. Fish are still taking shrimp patterns and larger
flies in the 4" to 6" size. We will still keep going because this could change
at any time. And just an observation not that many people fishing on the beach or
inside, strange!

Fish To Live Another Day

If
you release your fish please practice these Catch and Release Methods

By Ed Lombardo

If handled properly, fish have an excellent
chance of survival after they are released.

·
Bring the fish in as quickly as possible. Do not
play the fish to exhaustion.

·
Unhook the fish in quiet water such as an eddy
or slow spot. Do not drag the fish across land.

·
If you must handle the fish, always make sure
your hands are wet (fish have a protective mucous film sensitive to dry human
hands).

·
The best way to hold a fish (with wet hands) is
one hand around the tail section and the other beneath the belly just behind
the pectoral fins. Never, ever grab or hold a fish through the gills unless it
is already dead.

·
If you want a photo of the fish, make sure the
photographer is ready before you handle the fish. Make it quick, keep the fish in the water with it's head below the surface, count to three then lift the fish with both hands snap a piture and then quickly put the fish back below the surface. If more than one shoot is to be taken between snaps I always say" give it a drink, give it a drink" meaning, place the fish back below the water. And try not to
place the fish on the ground when taking a picture.

·
Never just throw a fish back into the water. If
a fish becomes passive, it is probably close to exhaustion. Gently remove the
hook within calm water, and then lightly cradle the fish with your hands to see
what it does. If it struggles to keep itself upright, hold the fish around its
tail and beneath its belly while pointing it against the current. You should
notice the gills opening and closing due to the rush of water. This is like
giving a fish mouth to mouth resuscitation. When the fish has recovered it
should swim away on its own.

·
Hooks and lures typically have barbs. With small
pliers you can pinch down the barbs. Without barbs hook removal is easier and
less traumatic to the fish and perhaps yourself. Remember, barbs where invented to keep bait on the hook, I always use barbless hooks for both freshwater and saltwater flyfishing .

·
Spinning lures typically have three hooks called
treble hooks. With wire cutters you can snip off one of the hooks or snap one
off with some pliers. Two hooks are still very effective and, once again,
easier to remove and less traumatic.
Best regards, and tight lines, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com

We found schoolies and shad to be somewhat prolific. The shad are coming into the river just at dark. They come in schools and when you get into them their a lot of fun, especially if you use a 6 or 7wt. rod, the bad news is they do not stay for long. Cast to the fish and release quietly and get your fly out into them as fast as possible. With all of that said we did in fact manage to take many fish for the 10 minutes that they where there; like in the past I do think that these shad will be in the river to stay for a while, as they have in many years past. We also took some very nice sideliners. Again remember, if you release your fish please practice Catch and Proper Release, thank you.

Best regards, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com

Hi everybody, I fished the Wood River just before this rain, and the river
was up about a good 8” to 10” from last week, made for a much faster drag free
drift. I fished terrestrials and BWO imitations the whole time. This time of
year fish are looking up for such naturals as Ants, Flying ants, Bees, Wasps,
Beetles, Inch Worms, and Crickets. Fish where not rising that often but when I
placed my fly in a likely holding lie fish came up and took it. Most of the
trout that I hooked came up to a smaller size Ant pattern black in color, a size
#18, I like using a larger size such as #14’s most of the time but on this day
they seem to like a smaller version. The few fish that did rise took a larger
size # 14 wasps pattern. I did not see many mayflies, BWO’s on the water at all.
There are some very nice fish that have been stocked in the river. The water is
clear even though we have had a lot of rain over this past weekend. One of the
annoyances one has to deal with this time of the year are floating leaves and
pine needles, not very good for both the dry fly and subsurface fly fisher. With
the rain of today the river will not be good for dry fly fishing for another 5
to 6 days.

Best regards and drag free, Ed

All of the Patriots enjoyed fly fishing at the cabin pond and I would take this opportunity in thanking the Thomas & Thomas staff and my good friends, Everett Thornton, Bob Santos, Toby Miller, and Dennis Kohler for all of their hard work and dedication. This year's event was bigger and better than ever, it just get better every year thanks to Matt Light and Addieville.

Best always, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com 401-949-2266
The water coming out of the estuary, (Chafee Wildlife Refuge) has been heated by the warm sun of the last two days. We did find fish up river where the water was much cooler, oh, about 10 to 15 degrees cooler, much better for holding bass and shad. We did in fact do very well, Hunter Seley came back for more and took some very nine shad and sidliners. Everett and Geno took some good fish as well.

With the cooler nights we had last week it was looking much better inside of the rivers, in respect to water temperatures. It will not be long now that the nights will cool things down. Again the best flies for me where my pink high tie and shrimp patterns.

Best regards, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com blog.edlombardoflyfish.com
Up to two weeks ago the river was very good, both bass and shad very prolific, shad would be in almost every night just before dark and some very nice fish at that, shad in the 20" to 22" size. As of late not many fish in the system. We also fished the breachway in Charlestown and only a few sideliners and no shad, this was last Thursday night on an incoming tide. Things should start picking up very soon! I will keep you posted.

Best regards, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com 401-949-2266
We fished the river on the incoming tide and the River was in the three C's, clear, cool and clean, and a good number of silversides to boot. My shrimp fly and my pink high tie worked well. We had to change our retrieve all

night long, slow, fast, slow and long, fast and short, fast and long and now you get the picture. I like to retrieve my fly fast when the water is moving slow and slow when the water is moving fast a good rule in general.

Best Always and tight Lines, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com
We fished mill Creek, Deputy's Spring Creek, Soda Butte, and the Fabulous BigHorn River, all fished extremly well. The fish at all of these rivers where all very respectable with an average size being 14" to 15" and on The Bighorn this was another big fish year almost like it was back in the 80"s and 90"s. the fish on the Horn averaged a good 16" to 17". All of us took fish in the 19" to 20" class and many of them. Our hatches where BWO's, Black and Tan Caddis, some PMD's, and a lot of stillborn Black Caddis. The terrestrial fishing this year was extremely good with hoppers, wasp, and ants, some of our party took most of their fish on hoppers all week long and big fish at that. Another great year out West.

Best always and tight lines Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com

Hi everyone, I fished the Wood River yesterday and found the trout to be
very cooperative when presented an imitation of the terrestrial kind. This is
the time of the year when trout start keying in on such insects as ants, flying
ants, bees, wasps, inchworms, and beetles. Trout took my wasp pattern very
aggressively, a size #12 hook, green rabbit fur body, loose cell foam tied in as
a shellback, and two to three turns of a brown furnace hackle just behind the
head of the fly. Trout also liked my sparkle ant pattern in sizes #16 and # 14.
The good news is, water level is just about right and with all of the rain we
had this past spring and early summer I believe the Wood River will be above normal regarding water
height for the upcoming fall season, it is usually very low for that time of the
year. Most of the trout took ants and wasps and one fish took a Gray Soft Hackle
Dry fly. I did see some BWO's and a few yellow mayflies later in the afternoon

We took fish on both the outgoing and incoming tide. The water is still cool and not that warm as of yet. We started at the Warren River just upstream from the bridge near the old American Tourister Plant; fish where just below the point to the right. The Bristol Narrows water color was very brown and dark; we took no fish and fished only for 20 minutes or so. We went back to the Warren River and by then the tide had turned to incoming, no fish the outgoing tide fished much better. The best fly pattern again was a shrimp pattern size #1, and 4" streamer patterns in dark olive and brown, a lot of mummies in the water and some very large in size, oh, 4 to 5 " long.

Two of my good friends that live on the Wood River told me that the Hex Hatch came off very good on Monday night, and they took a good number of fish. I will try and fish the Wood River soon, maybe tonight but with all of this rain still I do not thing the wading will be that suitable. Remember to use the spinner pattern during the hatch!

Best always, Ed

Some silversides all of the fish that I caught took my shrimp pattern. From 5:30to 7:30pm the we had an outgoming tide and then just after 7:30pm the tide changed to incoming. We took some nice fish from Sprague Bridge to just downstream, oh, about 500 to 600 yds downstream. Using intermediate fly lines, I like the Air-Flow 40+clear 40ft. wf section fly line, just a great line. I'm also using 20# tippet of Berkely Vanish Fluorocarbon.

Now that the sun has come back I will be fishing the Wood River;s Hex Hatch!

Best Always, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com

Hi everybody,we fished the Narrow
River last night and the conditions where again just right, outgoing tide when
we first started around 4:45, sand eels
enough to draw fish, and the river was clean, no weeds. We started above Sprague Bridge and worked our way down to the
mouth. Six fish where landed all schoolies, none over 19”. In four and a half
hours, not that many fish in the river. We used our usual fly patterns, shrimp,
high-tie streamers in hot pink, pink and yellow, made from craft fur. Oh; the
water temperature was a lot cooler, at least by 15 degrees or so.

Hi everybody, as stated in my last report pertaining to The Wood River conditions remain the same on the
Wood
River, as of Monday 6/8/09.
The rain might bring the river up a little but this overcast brings out the
hatches in a more prolific way. BWO’s Mahogany Duns, Midges, and Gray Drakes are
still showing regularly. BWO’s, and Mahogany Duns start showing around 11:00am
and go until late afternoon. Large Gray Drakes a size # 10 start just before
dark and fish key in on these larger Hex like duns. Which brings me to the
following, our famous Giant Michigan Mayfly, Hexagenia Limbata or Hex hatch will
be starting around June 15th. or 16th. depending on
weather conditions, we need hot humid days and with this latest weather it looks
as though the Hex may in fact be a little later than the 15th. For
the past thirty years or so the earliest I have ever seen this hatch start was
on June 12th. in a somewhat prolific way. I like using a size # 10 2x
long White, Yellow, or Orange body Wulff Pattern for my dun. For my
spinner same size and body of orange rabbit fur with spent wings of white calf
tail. Once this hatch gets started and the spinners are on the water I will use
my spinner imitation most or the time during this hatch. Much more on this
later. I will keep you posted!

As mentioned in my last report I will be fishing The Wood river more now that it's almost Hex Time! Look for my reports!

This was a great time and so many good friends and laughs! More than 12 Fly fishers showed and Geno and Keld where very happy with the turnout. Only two sideliners and two winter flounder where caught , but the night, tide, bait, and wind all good, just that the fish where not there. Geno said that he thought the water coming from the Gooseberry Island Pond in the back was too warm keeping the fish away.

I will be fishing the Wood River a lot more now, waiting for the Hex Hatch to start, hoping for hot humid weather! Look for my reports!

The fish that where taken where caught on shrimp patterns, even the two flats.

Best Always, Ed Lombardo www.edlombardoflyfish.com

Fish took shrimp, pink and bright green high ties, oh; about 3" to 5" in length. We started at around 5:30pm.

On these two days we managed only some 12 fish or so. One good thing that we observed where the good numbers of sand eels that where in the river. June is always the time for these little forage to start emerging. They where 11/2" to 3" long and sliver and brown in color. Some very large schools moving all through the system.

Best Always, Ed www.edlombardoflyfish.com
