Fly Fishing Report, 5/18/0/9 and 5/19/09 The Blackstone River

Jim D'Ambra with a nice Brown on The Stone!

Hi everybody, we fished the Blackstone river both Monday and Tuesday nights. We started fishing a size # 16 X-Caddis Tan in color (Elk Hair Caddis) to rising fish and did very well; this was around 5:15 PM. The fished stopped rising for about 30 minutes and then started again but where feeding this time on small gray midges in size #18’s and 20’s, I did in fact take one fish on my gray soft hackle size #16 but that was it. These fish where tough and would only look at and take smaller naturals and proved to be very selective. Then as always during this time of the year on the Blackstone the black caddis started coming off at around 8:10Pm Tom Daniels took fish on a black CDC caddis adult size# 16. I was using a black x-caddis and also did very well. Last night the same results but also a larger sulfur size #12 started emerging at around 8:35PM. I did see a few fish take the fast rising Sulfur emerger just as it reached the surface but this hatch was not prolific enough to really get the fish excited for more feeding action. The water level on the Blackstone is perfect right now!
