Fly Fishing Report 5/3/09

Everett and Geno at Gilbert Stewart House. Ladder and run inside Stewart yard.

Hi everybody, we took a look at the head waters of the Narrow River at The Gilbert Stewart House. We wanted to see if the Alewife’s and Blue Back Herring where in. They in fact where in and in good numbers at that. This started oh, around four weeks ago. I have always looked there around the same week we have our opening day of trout season here in RI, this is an easy date to remember. This migration will last for at least another three to four weeks, I’ll say around the end of May. If there are any large fish in the river this forage will bring them in. The alewife grows to a length of about 15 inches, but adult’s average only about 10 to 11 inches long and about 8 to 9 ounces in weight.

Six to eight inch flies will imitate it well. I like using my stealth fly when these copious bait fish are in the system. Rhody Flatwings are also a good imitation. But any fly pattern in these sizes will do. I like to tie my stealth with , from bottom to top, 4 white saddle hackles, under 2 tan, under 1 yellow, under 2 pink, under 2 dark blue, under 2 dark green, and toped with 2 black hackles. I use hook sizes 1/0. M-11’s long shank.
