Hi everybody, we fished the WoodRiver
and the water has come down to almost normal wading conditions. The Black
Quills are still emerging very prolifically, and the best time to take fish on
this big dark mayfly is just before dark and a half hour into the night. This
is when the spinners are on the water in decent numbers. What is nice about
this hatch is that it will start at around 11:00am and go into the night. I
find that the trout will take the nymph more than the dun early in the day. I
like using a floating nymph in a color of dark mahogany rabbit fur for the body
and a wing of CDC or loop of antron yarn in sizes 14’s and 12’s .
We also
took fish on Gary
soft hackles sizes 16’s and 14’s and on small Griffiths Nate size 18. Dark
caddis imitations are still good as well in smaller sizes, 18’s and 16”s.
