Fly Fishing Report 4/23/09

Geno Rapa with a nice native brook trout

Hi everybody, we fished the Wood river before the rain started and did in fact have good hatches of Black Quills size #12’s, Gray Stones size #16’s and #14’s. Between the blast of wind and when the water became still fish would come up and feed on top. We observe fish taking Black Quills, Gray Stones, and midge. The midge where a size 18 and at times a size 16. I did see spinners of the black quills and did take one fish on that imitation. For the Black Quill Dun I use a size #12 comparadun with a dark gray rabbit fur body and the spinner the same with wings of bill’s body braid. For the stone imitation I used a gray winded deer hair caddis imitation, with the hackle cut short so the fly would set in the film very low. For the midge I used my gray soft hackle dry in a size 16. The spinners on the water where pleasantly in abundant.  A streamer of black and orange marabou downwind style worked well also. After this rain I believe that the river will not be right fro another three to four days.
