Dick Pearce landing a nice brown on The Natchuag

A side channel, my personal favorite on The Farmington River
Hi everyone, last week we fished the Natchaug River in Connecticut, the river is low and in great need of rain, as is the case with most systems here in New England. The good news is that the water temperature is still in the mid 60’s. I haven’t been to the Natchaug in the past six days but I do know that the area did in fact get some rain within these past few nights. The river should be up to a better level. We took fish on wasp patterns, ants, soft hackle drys, and both std. and parachute style sulfure drys, in sizes #16’s to 12”s.
We fished the Farmington River as well. The Farmington is up a little from last week; Tom Daniels fished it last week and again this week and said that it had come up a good 10” to 12” from last weekend.
The river gave us large Sulfur Drakes in sizes as large as 12’s. Just great beautiful large yellow mayflies’ emerging from 10 AM to dark 9PM... and tan caddis in sizes 16’s and 14’s. When we first got there fish did take our tan caddis imitations, but this stopped at around 11:30AM, when the larger Sulfurs started. We also saw a few Bi-Color Duns and spinners, (Isonychia) in size 10’s and 8’s. Not many seen on the surface of the water, a few duns and spinners not enough to get the fish interested.
Later at around 8:30 PM another large mayfly emerged, it looked to me to be Gray Drakes, sizes 10’s and 8’s again not enough to excite the fish.
With all of this great hatching occurring all day long, food organisms so copious in nature, fish where rising far too sporacticly for my likening. I thing it has everything to do with the sudden rise in water level, trout have to acclimate themselves to the new levels before feeling normal, and more importantly, to start feeding in a more normal rhythm.
The water on the Farmington River and the Natchaug River is clear and beautiful.
