Hex spinners, note wings made with both, white calf tail and Bill's Body braid. Tails both white calf tail

Hi everybody, I haven't seen the Hex emerge on the Wood river yet, I think that the nights have been too cold, we need a good stretch of hot humid nights. Hopefully this will happen this week and into the weekend.

The following happened one year ago tonight, 6/18/2007. Look just how interesting the Wood River can be, in particular, the emergence of the Little Yellow Stonefly!

We fished the Wood River river last night, and did have fish coming up to BWO and Mahogany Dun, drys sizes #18's and #16's. These Mayflies, BWO emerge starting late morning and the spinner fall in the evening. The Mahogany Duns start a little later in the afternoon and the spinner fall is also in the evening. We had fish rising to the Little Yellow Stonefly, size # 14's. This hatch is not that often seen in fact it is rear on the Wood River. It did happen at 8:15pm. and did not stop until 9:00pm. I use a size #14 Elk - Hair Caddis imitation and cut down on the hackle so the fly sits low in the film. This is all they would take during this emergence, the fish wouldn't even take the big Hex at this time. Then at 9:05pm. another surprise, a spinner fall of the Hex started. The Little Yellow Stonefly stop and the Hex spinners emerged and the fish started taking the Hex spinner very aggressively. No Hex Duns just spinners, this hatch lasted for a good hour and fifteen minuets. We didn't get off of the river until just before 10:30pm. I like to use a size #10 mustad 94833 dry fly hook. This fly is tied with white calftail for both the tail and wings (spent wing style) and light yellow rabbit fur for the body. Some fish did take the dun imitation but most fish wanted the spinner. For the dun I use the same materials and add a brown furnace hackle up front. Next report I will say more about this fly. The good news about this hatch is that it will be here until the second week of August.
