Fishing Report 6/7/08

Hi everybody, Saturday 6/6/08 Everett and I fished the Wood River. We started out at 8:00am just upstream from Frying Pan Pond and encountered a large pod of rising fish. I looked into the water to see just what it was that was making these fish feed, like it was their last supper. At a close look I could see many beautiful spinners and duns on the water at the same time. Fish appeared to be taking both the spinners and duns. With further observation I also saw half spent spinners as well. So at one time, all three stages of this hatch where available to the feeding fish.
At first both Everett and I had a hard time getting these fish to take our offerings. We tried compara duns, parachute duns, both orange and rusty spinners, floating nymphs and still no takes, trout being very selective. All of these imitations where in sizes # 18’s & # 16’s.
Then I said to Everett; now they have made me mad, and I changed over to my most favorite dry imitation of all, my Soft Hackle Dry, a size #16 with a gray body of rabbit fur for dubbing. First cast a fish takes a good look. No take. The second cast a fish finally takes the fly. Now I say that’s it Everett, put on a softie.
No; that was not it, only that one fish took the fly. I think the main reason for us having such poor results is that this section of the river moves extremely slow. The trout had a good day & a half to inspect our flies.
We left those fish to find fish feeding in faster moving water. We did and the result much greater. It turned out to be great day and many fish caught on ants, wasps and softies.
This hatch should be around for a great deal of time, oh, on and off all season long!
