The Bblackstone River At Dusk

Hi everyone, we fished the Blackstone River Tuesday night and the hatch was on big time. We started at about 4:30pm and small tan caddis in sizes #18 & #16's where all over the river. Fish where rising from the time we got there to when we left at 9:00pm. I did in fact see BWO spinners in size #18's and a lot of small midges, tan in color. The fish liked our offerings of deer hair caddis patterns tan natural colored wings with dark olive or black body color. Elk Hair patterns worked as well in those sizes, 18's and 16's. The best presentation was down and across stream or straight down stream into the rising fish. Later on into the night oh, about 8:30pm the small Black Caddis started to emerge and fish started feeding on them. The Black Caddis emergence was sparse but we did manage to take a few fish on top with a black pattern before we left at about 9:00pm. Let me tell you a little trick I like using when this scenario is happening. Because we where fishing tan colored caddis patterns up into dark and taking fish, what I do instead of changing over from a tan to a black colored caddis pattern is I carry a black ( Sharpie) permanent marker and just color the tan deer hair pattern to match the black naturals.

This works especially well during low light conditions. If you can get away without changing your fly in the dark and using a head lamp or some other light it makes you a little more efficient.
