Fly Fishing Report, The Worm Hatch, 5/14, & 15, 2008

Hi everybody we fished the Worm hatch last Wednesday and Thursday nights. Both nights provided great numbers of both fish and very prolific and in fact copious numbers of worms. Thursday night both Everett and I where invited to join Captain Ryan Sansoucy of Hush Fishing Co. We started out the night with Ryan taking us to flat one of many on Ninigret Pond at around 5:30pm. I started out using my Stealth Fly, which is 7" in length, black, on top of dark green, on top of pink, on top of white, hackles. After only about 15 minutes or so of Ryan polling the flats, I hooked into a big fish in only maybe 2-3 feet of water, very exciting! The striper hit my fly like a fright train, I didn't end up hooking the fish for long, but it felt heavy and made a big splash and pushed a lot of water. Immediately after the fished dropped the fly it came right back for it again, my mistake, too slow on reacting to setting the hook on the second take. Just not paying attention, maybe first strike fever. A great opportunity blown. It was Everett's turn in trying his luck, and it wasn't long when he in fact hooks into a nice fish again in thin water, and then he hooked up again only a few minutes later. I did hook into another fish on the flats and by this time the fish started feeding on the worms very aggressively. Ryan moved into a spot just off of second cove to the right of the runway off of the parking lot. Lots of worms and fish. The fish where playing very hard to get. We changed flies over and over again, trying all patterns that have worked very well over the years. We finally started taking fish on a fly that I just cut the longer marabou tail off. The fished seen to like flies without a tail, and with a pink and white body color, only 1/1/4" long with peacock hurl for a head. As you know this changes offten ,you could go back the next night and that fly may fail to work. Long cast and changing flies is the game. Leaders no longer than 12' with carbon tippets.  We where fishing as small as 8lb. test and still having a hard time at that. The fish where not easy on both of these nights, but the friendship, rising stripers, and Ninigret Pond at sunset is just about as good as it gets. Ryan is a great guide and very knowledgeable. These worms should be around for a good three to four more weeks in our local salt ponds.
