Fishing report, Wood River 9/28/07 and 9/29/07

" T Time"
We fished the Wood River this past Friday and Saturday. On Friday fish where rising for most of the afternoon and evening. Again fish where feeding very heavy on midge adults and pupa. As other reports from this blog have stated, the terrestrial patterns are all working well. Now that the water is cooling down, Saturday’s temp. (60 degrees, @ 10:00am) we are finding trout in sunny areas such as in the center of the system (river) where the water will be warmest from late morning to oh, about 3:30pm.
After dark there are still some Light Cahill’s emerging, a size #14 and some even larger. Both the dun and emerger patterns are working. I like using parachute patterns for the dun and soft hackles for the emerger. Both flies are tied with light yellow rabbit fur for the bodies and for the parachute dun I like using white calf body fur for the upright post with light dun hackle. For the Soft Hackle Emerger I use lighter brown covert feathers from a grouse.
Just before dark the fish like seeing the soft hackle dry fly both right on top and as a stillborn or cripple. The soft hackle dun is tied with gray natural rabbit fur, a brown covert feather from the grouse. I do not put fly floatant on the soft hackle feather but on the gray rabbit fur body only. If the soft hackle gets pasted it will not look like an upright dun. To keep this fly upright as a dun, make a few false cast and every once in a while dab it in a cloth or just a plain piece of paper towel.
For the stillborn and cripples I do in fact paste up the wing of the soft hackle and body so that it does lay flat on the surface of the water simulating natural organisms that are spent (dead) and have become very easy for the taking. These patterns are tied in sizes #16 and #14’s.
