Fishing Report Narrow River, 9/21/07

Early Fall on The Salt

Hi everybody, I fished the Narrow River Tuesday night and then again last night (Thursday) with some friends on an outgoing tide. Tuesday night I started at around 4:30pm and fished until the bite was done, 7:45pm. Lots of shad and a few schoolies. Most of the shad where large in size although there where smaller shad mixed in. I used that Airflow + 40 intermediate fly line with pink flies. These flies are made with craft fur tied in high tie fashion. Flies are 3” to 5” in length. I almost always use a dropper fly which is 2 ½ ‘from the lead fly. I like using both an all white fly same size with the pink the fly as my lead. Remember the shad have a much smaller mouth so a size #1 or #2 hook for shad works well. The River is full with peanut bunker.  Keep changing the depth of retrieve, the fish hit at different depths; I just use the countdown method, one thousand one, one thousand two ECT until I find what level produces a fish. The tides are outgoing all week during the evenings.
Last night the bite started at the ebb, dead stop. This was around 6:00pm. We all got good numbers of fish mostly Hickory Shad a few Striped Bass. It seams as though the bass liked the pink fly better, and the shad both colors. Early at the ebb fishing the fly deep worked better and by 8:00pm the hits came closer to the surface, oh maybe 2’ or so.
