Fishing report 8/07/07

We fished the Wood River yesterday starting at around 2:00 PM to dark. The Water level is low so wading in a stealth manner is essential. The good news is that the water temperature is a healthy 66 degrees. It's T time; terrestrials are working all over the state. We did see a few rising fish occasionally and when we did my wasp and a black beetle pattern worked very well. I tie the wasp in sizes #14 and #12's. The pattern has a body of lime green rabbit fur and a shellback and head of yellow foam. It has just two or three turns of brown furnace hackle in back of the head and black strips on the back made with permanent marker. Patterns such as the inchworm, beetles, hoppers, and ants are all great patterns for this time of the year. When casting larger size terrestrial patterns such as the hopper or even a #12 wasp let it hit the water somewhat hard so to draw the fish's attention to it. For mayflies, the BWO is also on the water along with midges.
The Hex is winding down. Last night it was very sparse, but the trout are still taking the imitation. The spinner is working very good at 8:45 until well into dark. The Mahogany dun is providing some good spinner fall activity. This is taking place around 7:30pm to dark. I also recommend that if fished early morning i.e. (the spinner) of the mahogany dun one could do very well. Again this is the time of year that the terrestrials will start to fall into our waters. These flies i.e. warps, beetles, hoppers, ants, and inchworms, all become very prolific and the fish key in on them. One of the most exciting things about fishing these terrestrials is that they attract large fish during daylight hours.
