Fishing report 8/01/07
Hi everybody, just got back from Montana we had a great trip. I will tell you about it at a later date.
Fishing report, 8/1/07
We fished the Charlestown Breachway last night and just about an hour before sunset, 8:00pm, on an incoming tide the stripers showed up in great numbers. When we first arrived at 5:00pm the tide was starting to turn (incoming) and we could see good numbers of bait. Juvenile silversides where hopping at the surface of the water and once and a while we would see these copious baitfish being spooked by a predator from below. The size of the bait ranged from 1.5” to 3” in length. I was using a fast sinking intermediate line, a + 40 Air – Flow fly line, and with the tide running as fast as it was this line placed my fly just below the surface where the fish where feeding. Every so often I could see a fish flash just under the surface. This is when a fish comes up an takes the bait at that level. Even though this method worked well I would have preferred having my full floating line because the incoming tide was bringing a ton of weeds and other debris that made it difficult and very disturbing and almost impossible for hook ups at times. These weeds would not only collect on the flies but would fasten onto the leader as well. I was using a dropper some 30” from my lead fly. My dropper was a small white deceiver about 2” in length and my lead fly was a pink squid pattern about 4.5” in length. Make sure to take your insect repellent.
