Fishing report
Yesterday afternoon around 5:30pm to 7:30pm on the Wood River I was taking fish on my dry soft hackle, ants, and then a size #20 midge adult pattern, the griffiths nat. I went early and fished these fly patterns in anticipation of the Hex Hatch later. As it turned out the first two hours of my trip where much better. At about 9:pm a few fish; and I do say a few fish started showing with a showie splashy rise form. The first indication of the trout taking Hex emergers. I think I saw maybe just 10 risers of this kind in the beginning of the hatch. Ten minutes later I saw only five Duns on the water. I was fishing my spinner pattern and took three fish and lost another. The hatch (Hex) is not prolific at this time. What we need are HOT, HOT, HUMID days TO REALLY GET THESE BUGS TO START EMERGING! Hopefully THESE NEXT FEW WARM DAYS will get the Hex moving.
I keep my fly patterns simple for matching the stages of this hatch. For the emerger I use a heavy streamer hook in a size #10 2x long. I tie in a tail of white calftail the same length of the hook. For the body I tie in yellow floss with a ribbing of brown thin floss. The fly is weighted just in back of the hook eye and has a downwing style of the same white calftail, only as long as the body, and finished off with a collar of brown furnace hackle. I don't fish an emerger too often but it is the best way to take fish in the beginning of the hatch, i.e. when you see that showie splashy rise form. More later on my dun and spinner patterns.
Best always, Ed
