Fly Fishing Report, 6/24/09

Top my shrimp fly, and a nice fish last night from The Narrow River

The river fish well but we had to work at it. Some silversides all of the fish that I caught took my shrimp pattern. From 5:30to 7:30pm the we had an outgoming tide and then just after 7:30pm the tide changed to incoming. We took some nice fish from Sprague Bridge to just downstream, oh, about 500 to 600 yds downstream. Using intermediate fly lines, I like the Air-Flow 40+clear 40ft. wf section fly line, just a great line. I'm also using 20# tippet of Berkely Vanish Fluorocarbon.

Now that the sun has come back I will be fishing the Wood River;s Hex Hatch!

Fish are still taking worm patterns, mostly on the outgoing tide.

Hi everybody,we fished the Narrow River last night and the conditions where again just right, outgoing tide when we first started around 4:45,  sand eels enough to draw fish, and the river was clean, no weeds. We started above Sprague Bridge and worked our way down to the mouth. Six fish where landed all schoolies, none over 19”. In four and a half hours, not that many fish in the river. We used our usual fly patterns, shrimp, high-tie streamers in hot pink, pink and yellow, made from craft fur. Oh; the water temperature was a lot cooler, at least by 15 degrees or so.

Fly Fishing Report, Wood River, 6/8/09

Hex Nymph, note large gills along the abdomen top and the sharp trunks for borrowing in soft mud and silt.

Hi everybody, as stated in my last report pertaining to The Wood River conditions remain the same on the Wood River, as of Monday 6/8/09. The rain might bring the river up a little but this overcast brings out the hatches in a more prolific way. BWO’s Mahogany Duns, Midges, and Gray Drakes are still showing regularly. BWO’s, and Mahogany Duns start showing around 11:00am and go until late afternoon. Large Gray Drakes a size # 10 start just before dark and fish key in on these larger Hex like duns. Which brings me to the following, our famous Giant Michigan Mayfly, Hexagenia Limbata or Hex hatch will be starting around June 15th. or 16th. depending on weather conditions, we need hot humid days and with this latest weather it looks as though the Hex may in fact be a little later than the 15th. For the past thirty years or so the earliest I have ever seen this hatch start was on June 12th. in a somewhat prolific way. I like using a size # 10 2x long White, Yellow, or Orange body Wulff Pattern for my dun. For my spinner same size and body of orange rabbit fur with spent wings of white calf tail. Once this hatch gets started and the spinners are on the water I will use my spinner imitation most or the time during this hatch. Much more on this later. I will keep you posted!

As mentioned in my last report I will be fishing The Wood river more now that it's almost Hex Time! Look for my reports!

Thank you Geno Rapa, Keld Olsson, and The Rhody Flyrodders Organization of RI  for hosting such a great night on The Narrow River last night. This was a great time and so many good friends and laughs! More than 12 Fly fishers showed and Geno and Keld where very happy with the turnout. Only two sideliners and two winter flounder  where caught , but the night, tide, bait, and wind all good, just that the fish where not there. Geno said that he thought the water coming from the Gooseberry Island Pond in the back was too warm keeping the fish away.

I will be fishing the Wood River a lot more now, waiting for the Hex Hatch to start, hoping for hot humid weather!  Look for my reports!

The fish that where taken where caught on shrimp patterns, even the two flats.

David and Geno Rapa with two nice striped bass from the bay.

We fished Monday night and we all got fish and some very respectable fish at that! David out fished both of us! Fish took shrimp,  pink and bright green high ties, oh; about 3" to 5" in length.  We started at around 5:30pm.

Top Paula with her first sideliner, Eric and Dr. Sam Smart on the Narrow River as well.

The fishing on these two days was slow and that's the first time all season. On these two days we managed only some 12 fish or so. One good thing that we observed where the good numbers of sand eels that where in the river.  June is always the time for these little forage to start emerging. They where 11/2" to 3" long and sliver and brown in color. Some very large schools moving all through the system.

My good friend Arnie Waters with a nice Wood River Bow. Top a Cream Cahill Spinner, note the two tails. A size #14 works well.

Hi everybody, the Wood is just starting to clear itself from all of the wind infused floating debris, making dry fly fishing a lot better. In addition to BWO's in the afternoons especially on those overcast days, the good news is that the Gray Drakes have started to emerge. These Siphlonurus spices will show on the river at just before dark in the spinner stage. Dick Stewart tells us in his book that the duns are rarely seen because the nymph does not emerge to the surface of the water instead crawls onto rocks and the river bank to break from it's nymphal shuck. Fish started coming up to the spinner imitation just around 8:05pm. I like using my orange sparkle spinner in size # 12. I tie it with a tail of three to four barrbules of pheasant tail; a body of orange died rabbit fur and spent winds of Bill's Body Braid sparse. It is also a good idea to fish a nymph just below the surface during this spinner fall. In some cases the matting pair fall to the water together making a much larger silhouette and the fish go crazy when this happens. So at times a large parachute pattern such as an Adams will work well. The water temp. is a good 59 to 60 degrees.Beautiful large Cahills are also on the river as well, a soft hackle dry with a body of light yellow rabbit fur works well in sizes of # 14 and #12.

Reminder start looking for the great Hex Hatch around the 14th. of this month, June, a lot more on this very exciting hatch later in this blog!

Fishing Report, 5/21/09

Mike and Paula had a great day at Addieville East Farm, note the Tiger trout Mike is holding

Everett and I fished the Wood River last night and did OK but the wind and all the leaves and other floating mass really put a damper on dry fly action. Very few bugs on the water and the two fish that I landed  took my Black Sparkle Ant and my Gray Soft Hackle. I did in fact see a large mayfly looked to be a size # 10 most likely a march brown only a few and a few tan caddis adults size # 18. Also a lot of midge.
Hopefully the wind will finally quit for both the freshwater and the saltwater pursuit .

Fly Fishing Report, 5/18/0/9 and 5/19/09 The Blackstone River

Jim D'Ambra with a nice Brown on The Stone!

Hi everybody, we fished the Blackstone river both Monday and Tuesday nights. We started fishing a size # 16 X-Caddis Tan in color (Elk Hair Caddis) to rising fish and did very well; this was around 5:15 PM. The fished stopped rising for about 30 minutes and then started again but where feeding this time on small gray midges in size #18’s and 20’s, I did in fact take one fish on my gray soft hackle size #16 but that was it. These fish where tough and would only look at and take smaller naturals and proved to be very selective. Then as always during this time of the year on the Blackstone the black caddis started coming off at around 8:10Pm Tom Daniels took fish on a black CDC caddis adult size# 16. I was using a black x-caddis and also did very well. Last night the same results but also a larger sulfur size #12 started emerging at around 8:35PM. I did see a few fish take the fast rising Sulfur emerger just as it reached the surface but this hatch was not prolific enough to really get the fish excited for more feeding action. The water level on the Blackstone is perfect right now!
