The Wood River in all it's late summer beauty!

Everett and I fished the Wood River on Sunday from 1:30PM to dark. The water level is just right and the river is crystal clear. If your looking for rising fish they just about didn't exist! We did manage to take a few fish on terrestrial patterns, ants, wasps, beetles, and caterpillar patterns. Only ants and wasps worked on this day. With the water level just right it makes for a great drag free float. Things can only become better now that we are coming into September, my favorite time of the year for fishing terrestrials.

The Farmy halfway to the dam on the Riverton section

Hi everybody we fished the Farmington River Wednesday and the river above the Riverton Bridge to just below the dam had the most fishable water on the river. The water below the Riveton Bridge where the Still River meets the Farmy was still running high, 600 cfs. This amount of water entering into the Farmy was just too much water, the river for the most part  for the next three miles or so was not clear, mostly brown in color and not many fish rising at all. A bad day not only for rising fish but some fishers even with spinning gear where not doing very well.

The section above Riverton Bridge was perfect in flow and color, but very few rising fish as well. We didn't see many bugs, a few tan and winter caddis, size#18's & 16's, midges, size# 18's and smaller, very few sulfurs, and some BWO's. I did hear that the river is much better now that the rain has not been a factor for more than a week now.

Marla Blair tells that the Tricos have started and that is at 6:00AM to close to 11:00AM. All in all always a great time on the Farmy. I plan on going back soon.

Dr. Frank Mirrer with a nice schoolie

Dr. mirrer and I fished the pond and did very well on an incoming tide. The fish started hitting our flies about two hours after the tide started, almost always the best time. We took many fish again on green shrimp patterns. The Hickory Shade have started moving into the rivers, and mixed in with the bass. I'm starting to see more and more bait, silversides in particular.  The tides this week are incoming all week during the evenings.

Jim D'Ambra on The Wood River. Note the Hex Naturals in the photo above. Both Jim and Dr. Nick Califano had a great time!

The Wood River on this night provided a  good prolific hatch of hexagenia spinners and duns. Again the fish where up taking these bugs for a short time, oh maybe 15 minutes. Some good size trout took our offerings. This hatch should be around for a good two weeks or so.

Black Sparkle Ant - Hex Nymph 1 1/2" in length

Hi everybody, we fish the Wood River last night, and started at around 5:30PM. The water temperature was a good 65 degrees and at that time of the day not many fish where rising, very typical of this time of the year when the Hex is emerging later on in the evening. It seems that the trout are just content on waiting for that Big Mac i.e. Hex rather than a potato chip i.e. BWO! We did in fact have a few fish take my sparkle black ant, size #14 up until oh. about 7:30PM.

The Hex did emerge in good numbers and started at 8:55PM both duns and spinners where on the water and trout took both imitations. I do like using the spinner for most of the hatch. Last night it lasted for a good fifty minutes. If one where to stay later, it would still produce fish only at a slower pace. Size #10 and #8's in a white wulf or even an Ausable wulf  for a dun imitation and a spinner of the same size with a tail and wings of white calf tail, and both patterns tied sparse work well.

Fishing Report, 7/8/08

Hi everybody, we fished The Narrow River again last night and took small stripers from 5:30 to 7:30 on an outgoing tide. The wind was blowing straight upstream right in our faces for the whole time. Then at around 7:00pm the wind got even stronger. The fishing was very good for those two hours and then stoped at 7:30 just as the tide slowed. Again Shrimp patterns.
